What is an I Ching reading?

An I Ching reading uses the Book of Changes (易經) to reflect on a question. The moment of asking produces a hexagram and a changing line, which are read together to describe the situation and how it may develop.

What is a changing line?

A changing line, or moving line, is the one line of the hexagram that is in transition. It highlights the most active point of the situation and turns the Primary Hexagram into the Resulting Hexagram.

What do the Primary and Resulting Hexagrams mean?

The Primary Hexagram describes the present structure of your situation. The Resulting Hexagram shows the direction the changing line points towards — a tendency to consider, not a guaranteed outcome.

What is Meihua Yishu?

Meihua Yishu (梅花易數), or Plum Blossom Numerology, is a classical method of casting the I Ching from the time of the inquiry. It also reads the relationship between Body and Function through the Five Elements.

How an I Ching Reading Works

A reading begins with one clear question. YukDao casts your hexagram from the lunar year, month, day and hour of the moment you ask, following the Meihua Yishu method.

A hexagram is a figure of six lines, read from the bottom up. One of these lines is the changing line — the point where the situation is most in motion.

Primary, Nuclear and Resulting Hexagrams

The Primary Hexagram describes the present structure of your situation. The Nuclear Hexagram, drawn from its inner lines, reflects the dynamics working beneath the surface. The Resulting Hexagram, formed when the changing line turns, shows the direction of change.

None of these is a fixed verdict. Together they offer a way to see where a situation stands and what it is moving towards, so you can act with more clarity.

Body and Function

Meihua Yishu divides the hexagram into Body and Function, Ti Yong (體用). The Body represents you or the core of the matter; the Function represents the circumstances acting upon it.

Their relationship is read through the Five Elements — whether the surroundings support, drain or press upon the Body — adding a structural layer to the classical text of each hexagram and line.
