Chinese Zodiac Compatibility

For generations, the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac have offered a familiar way to think about character, timing and relationships.

Compatibility within the Zodiac is not simply about finding a “perfect match”. It comes from the traditional relationships between the Twelve Earthly Branches, the system underlying the twelve animal signs.

Some signs are connected through 六合 (Six Harmonies), others belong to larger groups known as 三合 (Three Harmonies), while signs positioned opposite one another form 六冲 (Six Clashes).

Together, these relationships offer a traditional way of observing harmony, difference and contrast.

They are best understood as a starting point rather than a verdict. Your Chinese Zodiac represents the year layer of a much larger birth picture. In BaZi, the year is considered alongside the month, day and hour.

Each of the twelve Zodiac animals corresponds to one of the Twelve Earthly Branches.

Traditional compatibility comes from relationships between these branches rather than simply from the personalities assigned to the animals.

Three of the most recognisable relationships are:

六合 · Six Harmonies

Six complementary pairs.

三合 · Three Harmonies

Four groups, each connecting three signs.

六冲 · Six Clashes

Six pairs positioned in opposition within the twelve-branch cycle.

This is why Chinese Zodiac compatibility is more nuanced than dividing the signs into those that are simply “good” or “bad” together.

六合 describes six pairings among the Twelve Earthly Branches. In Zodiac terms, these are:

• Rat 鼠+Ox 牛
• Tiger 虎+Pig 猪
• Rabbit 兔+Dog 狗
• Dragon 龙+Rooster 鸡
• Snake 蛇+Monkey 猴
• Horse 马+Goat 羊

Rather than interpreting 六合 as a guarantee of romantic compatibility, it is more useful to understand these as traditionally complementary relationships.

The idea can extend beyond romance. Harmony may be considered in friendship, family relationships or collaboration as well.

Where 六合 creates pairs, 三合 connects the Zodiac into four groups of three:

• Rat 鼠·Dragon 龙·Monkey 猴
• Ox 牛·Snake 蛇·Rooster 鸡
• Tiger 虎·Horse 马·Dog 狗
• Rabbit 兔·Goat 羊·Pig 猪

These groupings come from relationships within the Earthly Branch system and have traditionally been regarded as harmonious combinations.

A person therefore has more than one traditionally harmonious relationship within the twelve signs. There is the individual 六合 pairing, as well as the two other signs belonging to the same 三合 group.

Harmony is only one side of the traditional Zodiac system.

六冲 describes six opposing relationships:

• Rat 鼠↔Horse 马
• Ox 牛↔Goat 羊
• Tiger 虎↔Monkey 猴
• Rabbit 兔↔Rooster 鸡
• Dragon 龙↔Dog 狗
• Snake 蛇↔Pig 猪

The word 冲 carries the sense of opposition or collision, but it should not automatically be read as “these two people cannot be together”.

Within traditional interpretation, a clash can point toward tension, movement, difference or change. Context matters, particularly when the relationship is considered within a complete BaZi chart rather than through the birth-year animal alone.

No single Zodiac pairing can describe an entire relationship.

Chinese Zodiac compatibility looks at the animal associated with the year of birth. BaZi considers a broader birth structure through the Four Pillars: year, month, day and hour.

This distinction matters.

Two people whose Zodiac signs form a 六冲 relationship should not automatically be understood as incompatible. Equally, a 六合 pairing should not be treated as a guarantee of an effortless relationship.

The Zodiac gives us one traditional lens. The complete birth chart contains considerably more information.

Chinese Zodiac compatibility has endured because it gives us a simple language for thinking about relationships: where qualities may come together naturally, where different energies belong to a wider harmony, and where contrast may appear.

But relationships are never reducible to a single animal sign.

Consider 六合, 三合 and 六冲 as part of a much larger Chinese tradition of observing patterns and relationships, rather than rules deciding who belongs together.

Sometimes the most interesting question is not simply:

“Are our Zodiac signs compatible?”

It is:

“What else is happening within our birth charts?”
